Violet and Gold Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree with Gandaberunda Butta and Rettapet Border

The Gandaberunda — the mythical double-headed eagle, emblem of royal power and divine protection — has been woven into Kanchipuram silk for centuries, and its presence on a saree carries a weight that goes beyond aesthetics. This violet Butta Kanjeevaram is the kind of saree that is chosen for moments of ceremony: a seemantham, a bride's trousseau, a family heirloom in the making. Woven by our family's weavers in Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, where the Gandaberunda has been rendered in gold zari across generations of looms.

The body is a deep, authoritative royal violet in pure mulberry silk — lustrous and unbroken, a colour that reads as both regal and devotional in Tamil tradition. Across this violet ground, large Gandaberunda butta are scattered at measured intervals, each one rendered in fine gold zari with the characteristic detail of a weaver who knows this motif by heart: wings spread, two heads alert, the full ornate body of the mythic bird in gold against violet.

The border carries Rettapet — twin parallel gold zari lines that create a balanced, layered edge — with a delicate mauve/lavender shot-colour contrast band at the outer edge. The pallu continues the violet and gold, the Rettapet lines running the full width in quiet symmetry. For puja, for wedding, for the occasion that asks for something more than beautiful.
