Vintage Kanjivaram Vazhaipoo Stripes in Antique Olive Green & Raspberry Pink | Rettapet Seer Pallu

Vintage Kanjivaram Vazhaipoo Stripes in Antique Olive Green & Raspberry Pink | Rettapet Seer Pallu

One of the most sought-after pieces of this Diwali season, this vintage-inspired handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram saree brings Antique Olive Green together with a reddish pink carrying raspberry undertones, with the warmth of antique-gold zari running across the body. Its colour story recalls the layered hues of the Vazhaipoo — banana blossom — where earthy greens meet rich pink and crimson tones.

❖ This saree carries 18 days of loom work behind it, handwoven in Kanchipuram by artisan families continuing a generations-old craft.

Structured as a classic Rettapet composition, this pure mulberry silk Kanjivaram features an all-over body of closely spaced Vazhaipoo stripes, framed by paired borders of broad reddish-pink silk with raspberry undertones, edged in fine antique-gold zari, and finished with a Burnished Copper Orange Seer Pallu. A saree of this type typically represents approximately 18 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. Read our story.

Body: The all-over Vazhaipoo striped body features closely repeated horizontal bands of olive green and reddish pink with raspberry undertones, interspersed with fine antique-gold zari lines. Deep moss-green and muted bronze-olive accents add depth to the repeating composition, creating an old-world Kanjivaram character.

Border: The Rettapet border, a traditional double-border expression in Kanchipuram weaving vocabulary, introduces broad reddish-pink silk bands with raspberry undertones, edged with narrow ornamental gold-zari lines. The paired borders create a beautifully composed frame without overwhelming the striped body.

Pallu: Completing the composition is a Burnished Copper Orange and Gold Seer Pallu, richly patterned with closely repeated geometric zari ornamentation. Its luminous copper-gold surface creates a distinctive contrast against the softer earthy striped body and deep reddish-pink borders. Rooted in the visual language of traditional Kanchipuram silks, this saree celebrates the elegance of a vintage Kanjivaram — intricate in detail, balanced in composition and timeless in character. Explore the Rettapet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Like the first blush of a Vazhaipoo beneath the green of banana leaves, reddish-pink silk with raspberry undertones meets antique olive in a rhythm of fine golden lines. A vintage Kanjivaram, where Rettapet borders frame the weave in quiet symmetry and a copper-gold Seer Pallu catches the warmth of the evening sun. An old-world Kanchi story, told in silk.

Styling: Pair with a reddish-pink or antique-gold blouse, or echo the pallu with a burnished copper blouse for a warmer evening look. Keep jewellery to a single temple-gold necklace and jhumkas, with a low bun and a string of jasmine. Its stripes and copper-gold pallu suit Karthigai Deepam lamp-lighting evenings, Margazhi-season temple visits and concerts, winter family weddings and receptions, and Pongal gatherings in the new year.

Frequently bought together

What makes the Vazhaipoo stripes distinctive?
The body features fine alternating lines of reddish pink with raspberry undertones, antique olive green and gold zari. The repeating pattern recalls the layered tones of banana blossoms and foliage.
What is Rettapet?
Rettapet refers to a traditional Kanchipuram paired-border treatment. Here, reddish-pink silk with raspberry undertones and narrow decorative zari bands define the edges.
What does the Seer Pallu look like?
The pallu is a rich copper-orange silk field covered with closely repeated geometric gold-zari patterns, contrasting beautifully with the striped body.
Is this an actual vintage saree?
No. This is a newly handwoven pure silk Kanchipuram saree that revives a vintage Kanjivaram aesthetic — the stripes, paired borders and pallu treatment of older Kanchi design language. It is not an antique or previously owned piece.
Does this saree include a blouse piece?
Yes. The standard 6.3-metre Kanchipuram length includes a 0.8-metre blouse piece.
