Vintage Aubergine Handwoven Pure Silk KanchiPattu Saree with Zari Kattam and Arakku Red Korvai Mayil Border
Vintage Aubergine Handwoven Pure Silk KanchiPattu Saree with Zari Kattam and Arakku Red Korvai Mayil Border
This vintage handwoven pure silk KanchiPattu has the disciplined geometry of a Zari Kattam body set against the drama of a contrasting Korvai border. The body is a deep aubergine-purple, moving toward midnight plum in shadow, and is crossed with fine gold zari lines that form the characteristic checked grid.
❖ Nothing here comes off a shelf. 42 days of dyeing, threading, and weaving go into every saree, 16 of that on the loom.

Small individual gold zari buttas sit quietly within the checks, adding points of ornament without disturbing the rhythm of the Kattam. The effect is structured and restrained, allowing the depth of the aubergine silk and the fine geometry of the zari lines to remain dominant. Explore our pure silk Kanchipuram collection.
The Korvai border introduces a decisive colour shift into rich Arakku-crimson red. Antique-gold appearance zari gathers into broad ornamental registers, with repeated Mayil, or peacock, motifs surrounded by curling floral and paisley-like work. Fine geometric zari bands create additional layers beneath, giving the border a ceremonial richness against the disciplined checked body.
At the very edge, a narrow forest-green selvedge appears almost unexpectedly. The small line of green sharpens the aubergine, Arakku and gold composition and adds one of those distinctive details that makes an older Kanchipuram particularly memorable.
The pallu continues the Arakku-red and antique-gold story with dense zari work and a fine all-over geometric field. Its richness makes the transition from the restrained purple Zari Kattam body to the ornate pallu especially dramatic.
Styling: Preserve the vintage character rather than over-modernising it. Pair it with deep aubergine, Arakku red or forest-green silk and choose one strong traditional gold element. Keep the pallu open enough to show the movement from the checked purple body into the richly woven red-and-gold finish.
