Vadamalli Pink and Paaku Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Saree with Varisaipet Border and Oosivaanam Zari

Vadamalli Pink and Paaku Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Saree with Varisaipet Border and Oosivaanam Zari

The vivid pink of Vadamalli flowers meets Paaku brown, the colour of areca husk and rain-darkened timber. Flecks of gold rise through the silk, while the border settles into the quiet depth of antique Kanchipuram colour.

❖ Woven by hand in Kanchipuram over 16 days on the loom — a piece of a centuries-old weaving tradition, made with certified pure silk.

Woven in the Varisaipet tradition, the saree brings together several carefully proportioned gold-zari border registers, while its body takes on the oosivaanam effect of Vairaoosi: very fine, needle-like vertical zari filaments that shimmer as the silk moves. A brilliant Vadamalli pink body is threaded with shimmering narrow oosivaanam gold lines and small spaced gold buttas, bright as bougainvillea against an old brown courtyard wall. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Dark Paaku areca-brown Varisaipet bands have a layered architecture of gold floral medallions, leafy scrolls, fine chevrons, winding vine-like lines and narrow gold dividers.

Pallu: A dramatic deep-brown pallu displays closely packed shimmering gold diamond checks across a broad field, bordered by intricate floral zari work, multiple slim linear registers and contrasting restrained plain silk. Explore the Varisaipet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Wear with a Paaku-brown blouse, temple-gold jewellery and a simple centre-parted bun. The magenta body stays vivid in the pleats while the richly worked brown pallu offers a darker, more composed finish.

Frequently bought together

What does Varisaipet mean in this Kanchipuram saree?
Varisaipet describes the traditional multi-band arrangement of border registers. In this vadamalli pink and paaku brown saree, ornamental gold zari sections and finer dividers create a layered frame around the striped silk body.
What is the oosivaanam effect across the body?
Oosivaanam is the delicate vertical appearance made by thin, needle-like zari lines, related to the Vairaoosi visual vocabulary. Here those fine gold lines shimmer across the vadamalli pink and paaku brown body without overpowering its spaced buttas.
What stands out when the pallu is worn over the shoulder?
The pallu contrasts with the slender body stripes through a much denser field of handwoven zari. This piece features a dramatic deep-brown pallu displays closely packed shimmering gold diamond checks across a broad field, bordered by intricate floral zari work, multiple slim linear registers and contrasting restrained plain silk.
Can Idam Living help design a blouse to complement these colours?
Yes. A 0.8 m running blouse piece is included, and Idam Living offers optional custom blouse stitching. A Paaku brown-inspired contrast or an understated gold blouse can be discussed according to your preferred neckline and sleeves.
Does this piece include finishing services?
Fall and Picot finishing are complimentary. Handmade tassels, pre-pleating and other optional services may be available as add-ons and can affect the order preparation timeline.
