Vadamalli Magenta and Neelam Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Varisaipet Border and Oosivaanam Zari

Vadamalli blooms against the deep blue of an evening sky. The silk has the brightness of garden flowers after rain, with slender trails of gold running through it like distant light.

❖ This saree reflects 16 days on the loom and generations of weaving heritage from Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu — certified pure silk, handwoven by artisan families whose work sustains their village.

Woven in the Varisaipet tradition, the saree brings together several carefully proportioned gold-zari border registers, while its body takes on the oosivaanam effect of Vairaoosi: very fine, needle-like vertical zari filaments that shimmer as the silk moves. The vivid Vadamalli body has the saturated colour of amaranth flowers. Very fine gold oosivaanam stripes shimmer among spaced gold circular buttas, giving the bright silk measured linear detail. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Bold Neelam royal-blue Varisaipet registers hold wide gold zari bands, repeated florals and stylised peacock imagery, ending in a narrow blue-green selvedge.

Pallu: A dramatic blue-teal pallu carries a finely worked golden diamond lattice, a densely ornamental vertical floral panel, and multiple gold bands that echo the border. Explore the Varisaipet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Choose a deep cobalt blouse or a quiet antique-gold blouse for contrast. Gold bangles, an unfussy bun and the full blue pallu open the design beautifully for festive evenings and wedding functions.

What does Varisaipet mean in this Kanchipuram saree?
Varisaipet describes the traditional multi-band arrangement of border registers. In this vadamalli magenta and neelam blue saree, ornamental gold zari sections and finer dividers create a layered frame around the striped silk body.
What is the oosivaanam effect across the body?
Oosivaanam is the delicate vertical appearance made by thin, needle-like zari lines, related to the Vairaoosi visual vocabulary. Here those fine gold lines shimmer across the vadamalli magenta and neelam blue body without overpowering its spaced buttas.
What stands out when the pallu is worn over the shoulder?
The pallu contrasts with the slender body stripes through a much denser field of handwoven zari. This piece features a dramatic blue-teal pallu carries a finely worked golden diamond lattice, a densely ornamental vertical floral panel, and multiple gold bands that echo the border.
Can Idam Living help design a blouse to complement these colours?
Yes. A 0.8 m running blouse piece is included, and Idam Living offers optional custom blouse stitching. A Neelam blue-inspired contrast or an understated gold blouse can be discussed according to your preferred neckline and sleeves.
Is this a suitable colour for a festive evening?
The Vadamalli magenta and deep blue contrast has a lively ceremonial presence, and the layered gold border reads clearly in photographs. It can be styled for wedding functions, Diwali gatherings or cultural celebrations.
