Turquoise Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Zari Kattam and Vanasringaram Butta

At a Navarathri Golu display, when the goddess figures are arranged on the ascending steps of the kolu padi, the silk sarees chosen for the senior goddess dolls carry the weight of the entire visual composition — and this Kanchi Pattu saree from Idam Living, woven by the weaver families of Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, is precisely that kind of silk. The body is turquoise blue silk, and across its luminous surface the Zari Kattam grid is laid in pure gold zari — 3 gram gold, each thread certified — forming precise intersecting lines that divide the body into defined rectangular fields. Within each field of the grid, Vanasringaram Butta are woven in matching gold: Mayil (peacock), Yazhi (the mythical leonine creature), and horse figures alternating across the body in a procession of sacred temple motifs, each one a distinct element of the Vanasringaram royal court iconography.

The border is broad and deeply worked in pure gold zari, carrying elaborate Vanasringaram compositions — the same Mayil and Yazhi figures that populate the body now rendered at full border scale, surrounded by layered geometric zari bands in the classic Kanchipuram ceremonial register. The pallu opens into a grand field of pure gold zari, dense with the same Vanasringaram figures woven at full pallu scale.
