This is a confirmed Korvai composition in pure mulberry silk, with the body and the contrasting border woven separately and interlocked together by two weavers working in tandem at the point where the colours meet. A saree of this type typically represents approximately 18 to 22 active days on the loom, although individual weaving time varies. Body, Border and Pallu: Against that brightness sits the architectural strength of a traditional Korvai border. The contrast is dramatic: deep aubergine silk framing the yellow body with bands of glowing gold zari. Rows of finely woven Annam birds move across the border, separated by ornamental bands and a broad expanse of zari that gives the edge remarkable depth. The independently joined contrast border is what gives this Korvai its unmistakable definition. The pallu creates an entirely different mood. The yellow gives way to deep aubergine, covered with a closely worked gold zari lattice and elaborate woven framing. Folded, the saree feels jewel-like and ceremonial. Styling: This saree already carries two extremely strong colours, so the styling should not compete with them. Use a deep aubergine blouse to visually continue the Korvai border, or choose an antique-gold blouse for a more ceremonial interpretation. For something less expected, a dark emerald raw-silk blouse would provide a beautifully saturated counterpoint to the turmeric yellow. Antique temple jewellery works particularly well here — a single substantial necklace with jhumkas or large earrings is enough.
