Turmeric Yellow and Arakku Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree with Varisaipet Border and Oosivaanam Zari

Turmeric Yellow and Arakku Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree with Varisaipet Border and Oosivaanam Zari

Turmeric yellow, glowing like a harvest field in the late sun, settles against an Arakku border as deep as polished red wood. The saree is bright without losing the measured dignity of an old Kanchi composition.

❖ Handwoven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu — this saree spent 16 days on the loom, woven by artisan families who have practiced this craft for generations.

Woven in the Varisaipet tradition, the saree brings together several carefully proportioned gold-zari border registers, while its body takes on the oosivaanam effect of Vairaoosi: very fine, needle-like vertical zari filaments that shimmer as the silk moves. A sun-warmed Manjal yellow body carries delicate, closely arranged oosivaanam gold lines that flicker across the silk, like afternoon light over ripening fields. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Deep Arakku maroon Varisaipet borders layer thin gold rules, wider zari bands, floral medallions and a procession of small elephant-like figures within richly ornamental registers.

Pallu: The dark Arakku pallu is densely woven with glittering gold geometric and floral textures, framed by fine zari divisions and a richly detailed temple-inspired end panel; yellow and red tassels are visible. Explore the Varisaipet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: A deep maroon blouse brings the contrast into focus. Wear with traditional gold earrings and fresh kanakambaram flowers, allowing the broad border and tasseled pallu to remain the centre of attention at festive gatherings.

What does Varisaipet mean in this Kanchipuram saree?
Varisaipet describes the traditional multi-band arrangement of border registers. In this turmeric yellow and arakku maroon saree, ornamental gold zari sections and finer dividers create a layered frame around the striped silk body.
What is the oosivaanam effect across the body?
Oosivaanam is the delicate vertical appearance made by thin, needle-like zari lines, related to the Vairaoosi visual vocabulary. Here those fine gold lines shimmer across the turmeric yellow and arakku maroon body without overpowering its spaced buttas.
What stands out when the pallu is worn over the shoulder?
The pallu contrasts with the slender body stripes through a much denser field of handwoven zari. This piece features the dark arakku pallu is densely woven with glittering gold geometric and floral textures, framed by fine zari divisions and a richly detailed temple-inspired end panel; yellow and red tassels are visible.
Can Idam Living help design a blouse to complement these colours?
Yes. A 0.8 m running blouse piece is included, and Idam Living offers optional custom blouse stitching. A Arakku maroon-inspired contrast or an understated gold blouse can be discussed according to your preferred neckline and sleeves.
Are tiny changes in the fine zari lines normal?
Small variations in thread tension or joins can occur in handwoven silk. These should be distinguished from actual damage, stains or significant defects, which should be raised with Idam Living for review.
