Fresh Leaf Green and Deep Paaku Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Zari Buttas and Ornate Border

Fresh Leaf Green and Deep Paaku Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Zari Buttas and Ornate Border

Like sunlight passing through tender new leaves, this Thulir Pachai Kanchipuram silk glows against an earthy Paaku-maroon border, with measured gold buttas and a richly worked pallu.

❖ This saree was woven over 16 days on the loom in Kanchipuram, using Silk Mark certified pure silk, by weaver families whose craft has been passed down for generations.

Woven in the Varisaipet tradition, this pure mulberry silk saree sets its border into multiple carefully ordered pettu registers. Small zari buttas punctuate the green body, making a measured pattern of repeating points; the ornament is not surface embroidery. Varisaipet denotes the multi-band border arrangement, not a claim about a separate joining construction. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Body: A newly unfurled thulir leaf green, lively and sunlit, carries tidy vertical rows of petite golden zari buttas. The repeating ornaments read as stylised floral and peacock-inspired marks rather than a continuous zari field.

Border: Deep Paaku maroon, like the polished brown-red skin of an areca nut, forms the grand Varisaipet border. Alternating slender zari rails, geometric floral registers, and a wide scrolling ornamental band create a tiered Kanchipuram pettu. The larger scrollwork is figurative and floral; an exact bird species within it cannot be verified from the photographs.

Pallu: A deep Paaku-maroon pallu opens into long vertical columns of gold brocade, floral vines, narrow zari separators, and elaborate paisley-like ornamental panels. A broad horizontal ornamental register gives the lower edge a ceremonial finish. The richly patterned field contrasts with the open, fresh green body. Explore the Varisaipet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Let the vivid green stand against an antique-gold blouse or a plain dark maroon silk blouse. Temple jewellery, a restrained jasmine braid and a clean shoulder drape emphasize the architectural border. Especially lovely for winter wedding ceremonies and traditional family celebrations.

Frequently bought together

What does Varisaipet mean in this Kanchipuram saree?
Varisaipet refers to the traditional multi-band arrangement of border details. In this fresh leaf green and deep paaku maroon saree, layered zari stripes and ornamental registers form a distinctive rhythm along the pettu.
How are the small gold buttas arranged across this saree?
A newly unfurled thulir leaf green, lively and sunlit, carries tidy vertical rows of petite golden zari buttas. The repeating ornaments read as stylised floral and peacock-inspired marks rather than a continuous zari field. The motifs are woven into the fabric rather than embroidered afterwards.
What makes the pallu of this particular saree special?
A deep Paaku-maroon pallu opens into long vertical columns of gold brocade, floral vines, narrow zari separators, and elaborate paisley-like ornamental panels. A broad horizontal ornamental register gives the lower edge a ceremonial finish. The richly patterned field contrasts with the open, fresh green body.
Can Idam Living create a blouse to suit these colours?
Yes. The saree includes a 0.8 m running blouse piece, and optional custom blouse stitching is available. A paaku-maroon accent can be considered for a contrasting blouse; the final design and available fabric are discussed with our team.
How should I care for its zari work?
Dry clean only. Keep the saree folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight, refold periodically, and avoid perfume directly on the silk or zari.
