Sunflower Yellow Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Korvai Saree with Mayil Buttas

Sunflower Yellow Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Korvai Saree with Mayil Buttas

The first impression is colour: radiant sunflower yellow set against jewel purple, coral orange and a fine dark-green edge. The body remains bright and uncluttered, allowing the Mayil buttas to punctuate the silk before the border and pallu build into a much richer composition.

❖ 20 days on the loom, handwoven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu by artisan weaver families — every purchase supports their village and this centuries-old tradition.

Woven in the Korvai tradition, the sunflower-yellow body is sharply framed by its contrasting purple and coral-orange border. Spaced Mayil zari buttas give the body a traditional rhythm without competing with the broad lower border. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 20 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The border layers jewel purple, coral-orange silk and antique-gold zari, with a prominent Mayil band framed by fine geometric rows. A narrow dark-green selvedge gives the saturated colours a crisp finish.

Pallu: The pallu turns to deep jewel purple and is filled with dense gold zari lattice work and long ornamental panels, making it especially striking when worn loose over the shoulder.

Styling: Let the colour lead. A purple, deep green or antique-gold blouse will keep the palette saturated, while a plain sunflower-yellow blouse creates a cleaner line. Kemp jewellery, temple gold or one pair of statement jhumkas is enough because the pallu already carries substantial visual richness.

Why is the contrast so strong in this Korvai saree?
The sunflower-yellow body is framed by jewel purple and coral-orange border sections, producing the crisp colour separation associated with Korvai styling. The dark-green selvedge gives the edge an additional line of definition.
How do the Mayil buttas look on the yellow body?
The Mayil zari buttas are spaced across the body, so each motif reads clearly against the luminous yellow silk. Their scale is restrained enough to leave the body open while the border carries the heavier ornament.
What makes the pallu especially rich?
The pallu shifts into deep purple and carries dense gold-zari lattice work with long ornamental panels. Worn loose over the shoulder, it becomes the most opulent part of the saree.
Can I keep the blouse simple with this saree?
Yes. A plain purple, dark green, antique-gold or even matching yellow blouse would work well because the border and pallu already provide substantial detail. Idam Living can also help design a custom blouse around the saree palette.
Are small variations normal in a handwoven Kanchipuram saree?
Tiny variations in tension, motif placement or yarn joins can occur in handloom weaving and are part of the making process. Actual stains, tears or significant damage are different and should be treated as quality issues, not as handloom character.
