Sandalwood Copper and Royal Violet Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Varisaipet Saree

Sandalwood Copper and Royal Violet Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Varisaipet Saree

Like evening sun settling on sandalwood, a warm copper-amber silk carries hints of dusty rose beneath shimmering lines of gold. At the edges, an electric Neelam violet recalls the depth of the twilight sky, finished in the glow of temple brass.

❖ This piece took 16 days on the loom to weave in Kanchipuram — handwoven by artisan families whose generational skill keeps this heritage tradition alive.

Woven in the Varisaipet tradition, this Kanchipuram silk draws its architectural character from the arrangement of ornamental border bands. Across the body, oosivaanam takes the form of very thin hand-laid zari filaments in vertical, needle-fine lines, a Vairaoosi-like detail that shimmers when the folds move. The sandalwood-copper body shifts from amber and muted burnt orange to a soft rose-lilac cast in the folds. Fine, closely laid gold zari filaments run vertically as oosivaanam lines, interspersed with small spaced gold floral or circular buttas. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A wide royal violet-blue Varisaipet border features repeated registers of gold zari. Ornamental bands alternate peacock figures with circular chakram medallions, separated by fine floral and geometric dividers, with a broad unworked violet silk panel between the two motif bands.

Pallu: A deeply luminous royal-violet pallu is richly woven in gold zari, with an expansive fine diamond-texture field and a vertical ornamental panel of round chakram medallions, framed by floral and geometric registers. Purple silk and golden-yellow tassels finish the contrast. Explore the Varisaipet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Let the saturated violet border lead the look with a matching raw-silk blouse and antique-gold jhumkas. A low braid with jasmine, restrained bangles and a broad shoulder drape will make the intricately woven pallu the focus at temple gatherings, family celebrations or an evening reception.

What does Varisaipet mean in this Sandalwood Copper and Royal Violet saree?
Varisaipet refers to the traditional multi-band arrangement of Kanchipuram border decoration. Here the royal-violet gold peacock and chakram registers give the edge its distinctive, layered visual rhythm.
What are the fine vertical lines on this copper silk?
They are oosivaanam, slender vertical zari stripes related to the Vairaoosi design vocabulary. They shimmer subtly between the spaced gold buttas rather than making a solid metallic field.
How does this saree’s pallu differ from its striped body?
A deeply luminous royal-violet pallu is richly woven in gold zari, with an expansive fine diamond-texture field and a vertical ornamental panel of round chakram medallions, framed by floral and geometric registers. Purple silk and golden-yellow tassels finish the contrast. This creates a pronounced shift from delicate linear texture to densely ornamental zari.
Can Idam Living design a blouse for the violet border?
An approximately 0.8 m running blouse piece is included. Optional custom stitching can be discussed around a violet silk or warm copper colour story, with neckline and sleeve preferences chosen by the customer.
How should I care for the detailed gold zari on this saree?
Dry clean only. Store folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight, refold periodically, and avoid spraying perfume directly on silk or zari.
