Royal Blue and Gold Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Saree with Zari Kattam Vairaoosi Body and Self-Colour Border
Royal Blue and Gold Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Saree with Zari Kattam Vairaoosi Body and Self-Colour Border
Royal blue in pure silk has a quality of depth that is almost architectural — it holds its colour absolutely, neither shifting toward navy nor brightening toward cobalt, simply present as the most saturated version of itself. This Zari Kattam Kanjipuram wears that blue with the addition of fine Vairaoosi gold needle-lines running the full length of the body, the zari intersecting in Zari Kattam formation while also running as continuous vertical lines — a combination that catches light from every angle. Woven by our family's weavers in Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, where the ZK Vairaoosi combination represents the body at its most technically refined.
The body is a deep, pure royal blue in mulberry silk — self-colour throughout, as the Zari Kattam demands. Fine gold zari lines run vertically in the Vairaoosi needle formation while also intersecting horizontally in the ZK grid, creating a body texture that is more complex than either technique alone: the surface shimmers with fine gold in both directions, the blue visible between the lines giving the fabric its particular depth.
The border is self-colour royal blue — a plain, unbroken continuation of the body's blue, finished with a narrow gold stripe at the outer edge. The decision not to add a contrast border is the right one here: the body's Zari Kattam Vairaoosi composition is the saree's statement, and the self-colour border keeps the full attention on it. Royal blue and gold, restrained and complete.
