Red-Pink Double Shot Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Vairaoosi Saree with Zari Buttas
Red-Pink Double Shot Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Vairaoosi Saree with Zari Buttas
Red and pink seem to occupy the same silk in this handwoven pure silk Kanchipuram saree. Through one fold the body reads as saturated raspberry red, while another catches the light and moves towards vivid pink and fuchsia. It is this double-shot colour that gives the saree its extraordinary depth, with gold zari adding warmth without flattening the changing silk underneath.
❖ This saree took 45 days to make — the silk is dyed, threaded, and hand-woven over roughly 20 on the loom.

This is a confirmed Vairaoosi composition in pure mulberry silk, with fine continuous zari lines travelling in one direction across the body — unlike Zari Kattam, there is no intersecting gold grid, and the lines sit parallel to one another, seeming to appear and disappear as the saree moves, with small gold zari buttas interrupting the shimmer at measured intervals. A saree of this type typically represents approximately 20 active days on the loom, although individual weaving time varies. Woven for Idam Living by skilled artisan families in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. Read our story.
Body, Border and Pallu: This is Vairaoosi, identified by the fine continuous zari lines travelling in one direction across the body. Small gold zari buttas interrupt the shimmer at measured intervals, but the dominant impression remains the extraordinary fine-lined surface of the Vairaoosi weave. The border gathers the zari into several richer ornamental registers: a pointed gold edging marks the transition from the Vairaoosi body before bands of floral, geometric and repeating traditional figural motifs build towards the lower edge. The pallu is more concentrated still, opening into an extensive gold zari field with a fine diamond lattice through the centre and long ornamental registers framing either side. Explore the Vairaoosi collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.
Styling: For styling, resist trying to match the changing body colour exactly. A deep raspberry, burgundy or saturated pink blouse keeps the palette tonal, while antique gold creates a more ceremonial treatment. Temple jewellery or substantial gold jhumkas work naturally with the zari. Keep the hair in a long braid or a clean low bun, with jasmine when you want the look to lean more traditional.
