Red and Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Zari Kattam Grid and Kamalam Butta

Red is the colour of every auspicious beginning in Tamil tradition — and this red Zari Kattam Kancheepuram saree is built to be worn at the moments that matter most. Zari Kattam is the weave where fine zari threads intersect across the silk body to form a luminous grid, the gold catching light at every angle while the silk beneath maintains its pure, self-colour integrity. Woven by our family's weavers in Kunnam village, where this craft has been practised without interruption across generations.

The body is a deep, ceremonial red in pure mulberry silk — self-colour throughout, as Zari Kattam demands. Fine gold zari threads cross the body in a precise grid, and nestled within the squares of this grid, scattered Kamalam (lotus) butta in gold emerge like offerings placed at intervals. The lotus is one of the most sacred motifs in Kanchipuram weaving — its presence on a bridal or wedding saree carries quiet, deliberate meaning.

The border is deep forest green, joined with a rich gold zari band carrying the Mayil (peacock) — the most celebrated bird in Kanchipuram iconography — rendered in elaborate detail in the pallu. The green and red together are the classic Kanchipuram bridal pairing: auspicious, bold, and rooted in temple tradition.
