Red and Black Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchi Pattu Saree with Gold Zari Varisaipet Border

Red and black is the combination that needs no introduction in the South Indian silk tradition — it is the colour pairing of temple gopurams, of festival processions, of the bride who wants to be seen. This Kanchi Pattu carries that combination with the authority of a plain red silk body meeting a broad black border dense with gold zari Varisaipet bands. Varisaipet is the traditional multi-band border structure with repeated woven lines, each horizontal band a distinct composition in gold that builds a border of genuine ceremonial weight. Woven by our family's weavers in Kunnam village, near Kanchipuram.

The body is a pure, unbroken red in mulberry silk — no butta, no zari, no interruption to the silk's own luminosity. The red is deep and warm, the kind of colour that photographs dramatically and wears even better. The plain body allows the border to take complete precedence, which is precisely how this saree is designed to be read.

The border is a wide sweep of black silk carrying multiple bands of gold zari in Varisaipet multi-line construction — each line precise, each band distinct, the whole composition building toward a pallu of layered gold against black. The final edge carries a narrow zari stripe. Red and black and gold: the triumvirate of Kanchipuram festive dressing, here executed with restraint and weight in equal measure.
