Raspberry Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Peacock Border

At a family wedding, the first glimpse is of raspberry silk crossed by tiny golden lines; the green-edged peacock border brings the unmistakable colour confidence of old Kanchi.

Woven in the Zari Kattam tradition, the fine grid of zari is part of the visual rhythm of the body, while petite buttas add delicate points of gold. A luminous raspberry-red silk body, reminiscent of ripe berries and deep rose petals, is traced with delicate gold zari kattam checks and scattered petite gold floral buttas. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The broad aubergine-purple border carries peacocks nestled into malar kodi, a flowering vine, in glowing antique-gold zari. A fine forest-green edge recalls a shaded banana leaf beside the vivid rose-red silk.

Pallu: An elaborate pallu moves from dark aubergine-plum into burnished gold, with a densely woven lattice of tiny floral zari forms, a decorative vertical motif panel and fine gold pinstripes. Explore the Zari Kattam collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Wear with a deep green silk blouse, antique-gold jhumkas and jasmine tucked into a low bun. The fine grid makes the body glow in evening light, while the darker pallu can be carried over the shoulder to show its full ornamental field.

Frequently bought together

What is Zari Kattam in this saree?
Zari Kattam refers to the fine grid of gold-toned zari lines across this raspberry red silk body. The petite buttas sit within that delicate checked rhythm.
What makes the border of this raspberry red Kanchipuram distinctive?
The broad aubergine-purple border carries peacocks nestled into malar kodi, a flowering vine, in glowing antique-gold zari. A fine forest-green edge recalls a shaded banana leaf beside the vivid rose-red silk. The peacock and malar kodi motifs are larger and more ornamental than the small buttas on the body.
How does the pallu differ from the body?
The body is a restrained grid with petite buttas, while the pallu becomes more densely ornamental. An elaborate pallu moves from dark aubergine-plum into burnished gold, with a densely woven lattice of tiny floral zari forms, a decorative vertical motif panel and fine gold pinstripes.
Can I have a blouse stitched to complement these colours?
Yes. The saree includes a 0.8 m running blouse piece, and Idam Living offers custom blouse stitching. Wear with a deep green silk blouse, antique-gold jhumkas and jasmine tucked into a low bun.
How should I care for the gold zari and silk?
Dry clean only. Store the saree folded in soft muslin, away from direct sunlight, and avoid spraying perfume directly on silk or zari.
