Plum-Tinged Espresso Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Butta Saree with Gandaberunda Zari Border
Plum-Tinged Espresso Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Butta Saree with Gandaberunda Zari Border
A Plum-Tinged Espresso Brown gives this handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram saree an unusually deep, burnished colour story. The silk moves between dark coffee bean, cocoa and subtle aubergine-plum through the folds, creating depth without losing its distinctly brown character. Petite Gandaberunda-inspired thanga-zari buttas are scattered sparingly across the body.
❖ 40 days in the making. From dyed silk thread to finished weave, with about 16 of that on the loom itself.

This is a confirmed Butta composition in pure mulberry silk, with individually placed Gandaberunda-inspired zari buttas set across an otherwise open silk field. A saree of this type typically represents approximately 16 active days on the loom, although individual weaving time varies. Woven for Idam Living by skilled artisan families in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. Read our story.
Body, Border and Pallu: The open body keeps the dark silk beautifully uninterrupted, allowing each mythic bird butta to appear almost like a small point of antique gold against the espresso field. The restraint is deliberate: rather than filling the body with ornament, the weave lets colour, silk lustre and individually placed zari motifs establish the rhythm. The broad Pettu becomes considerably more elaborate. Large Gandaberunda-inspired bird medallions are held within structured ornamental panels and surrounded by curling floral and Kodi-Valli forms. Fine Seer bands, miniature geometric registers and a crisp Vanki-inspired edge create the disciplined layering associated with old-Kanchi border vocabulary. The pallu reaches the saree’s richest point, opening into a dense Poo-Kodi zari Jaal filled with floral rosettes and curling vine work. Alongside it, a strong vertical ornamental panel carries repeated bird forms through narrow woven registers. Against the Plum-Tinged Espresso Brown silk, the almost continuous thanga zari develops a deep antique glow, giving the saree a stately heirloom presence. Current Look
Keerthy Suresh’s recent burgundy-and-antique-gold TIFF look has brought renewed attention to dark jewel-toned silks illuminated with warm gold. This Kanchipuram takes that mood into a deeper Espresso Brown direction, with a subtle plum cast, sparse Gandaberunda-inspired buttas and richly worked thanga-zari borders and pallu.
Styling: Pair it with the tonal Espresso Brown running blouse for a continuous, quietly regal treatment. Antique temple gold naturally echoes the thanga zari, while emeralds, rubies or Kemp stones can introduce controlled colour against the deep cocoa-plum silk.
Blouse Piece Included: 0.8m running blouse piece. See our Blouse Stitching Guide.
