Parrot Green and Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Butta Jaal Body and Korvai Sorgavaasal Mayil Border
Parrot Green and Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Butta Jaal Body and Korvai Sorgavaasal Mayil Border
The Korvai technique is considered the pinnacle of Kanchipuram structural weaving — it is the weave where body and border are woven separately and structurally interlocked on the loom, so that the two elements of silk become one fabric without any stitching or joining after the fact. In this parrot green and maroon Korvai Kanjivaram, that structural accomplishment meets a body of complete decorative density and a border carrying the Sorgavaasal Mayil — the peacock at the threshold of heaven — in gold. Woven by our family's weavers in Kunnam village near Kanchipuram.
The body is a vivid parrot green in pure mulberry silk, covered entirely in a dense all-over butta jaal — small, precise gold zari motifs arranged in an unbroken pattern across the entire body surface. This density of decoration is a weaving achievement in itself: each tiny butta a separate act of interlacement, the accumulation of hundreds of them creating a body that blazes with gold in any light.
The border is deep maroon — a Korvai-interlocked contrast to the parrot green — structured with the layered band composition of a traditional Kanchipuram pallu and carrying the Sorgavaasal Mayil in its widest band. The peacock here is large and elaborate, its wings and tail rendered in fine gold zari with a detail that rewards close examination. Parrot green and maroon with the Sorgavaasal Mayil: a Korvai saree worthy of a bride's trousseau.
