Pale Gold and Steel Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Silk Thread Teardrop Butta and Rettapet Yaanai Border

When the Panguni Uthiram festival procession begins at the local temple, the women who have walked this route for decades know exactly what they will wear — and a pale gold saree with a steel blue border carries the kind of authority that needs no explanation. This Kancheepuram saree from Idam Living, woven by the weaver families of Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, is woven for exactly that kind of morning.

The body is pale gold silk — a warm champagne ground of rare luminosity — and across it Silk Thread Butta are scattered in steel blue silk thread: teardrop-form motifs, each one a precise downward-pointing drop woven in the muted steel blue against the pale gold ground, the two colours together creating a palette of extraordinary restraint and contemporary elegance. The Rettapet weave frames the body: twin parallel border lines woven along the edge, creating a layered visual rhythm that frames the design as it transitions into the border.

The border is steel blue silk, and across it a Yaanai procession is woven in gold zari — the elephant marching in a continuous band across the border's central register, rendered at full border scale in gold against the steel blue ground. Geometric zari bands frame the Yaanai procession above and below, the layered Rettapet structure giving the border a visual depth that the pale gold body resolves into. The pallu continues the steel blue ground with the Yaanai and Rettapet banding at full pallu width.
