Neelam Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Zari Kattam Saree with Gandaberunda Kamalam Buttas

One of Idam Living’s best-selling Kanchipuram colour stories this season, this Neelam blue has the kind of saturated radiance that makes gold zari look almost lit from within. The fine kattam gives the surface order and rhythm, while the Gandaberunda and kamalam buttas add unmistakable traditional character.

❖ This saree carries 16 days of loom work behind it, handwoven in Kanchipuram by artisan families continuing a generations-old craft.

The Zari Kattam structure lays a fine gold grid over the Neelam-blue silk, creating a luminous framework for alternating Gandaberunda and kamalam buttas. The repeated geometry makes the colour feel even more saturated as the saree moves. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The broad border is densely handwoven in gold zari, with large figurative bird panels framed by multiple traditional registers. Its scale gives the saree a formal, architectural finish against the intense blue body.

Pallu: The pallu is richly worked with dense geometric zari, framed by ornamental bands that carry the weight of the broad border into the shoulder drape.

Styling: A plain Neelam-blue blouse keeps the look intensely tonal, while antique gold or muted magenta can add contrast. Style with temple earrings, a single long necklace and a smooth open pallu. The blue and gold combination is especially effective for evening Diwali gatherings and wedding receptions.

What is Zari Kattam in a Kanjeevaram saree?
Zari Kattam is a fine zari-grid structure woven across the body. On this saree, the grid creates a luminous framework over Neelam-blue silk and gives each butta a clearly defined place within the composition.
Which motifs appear inside the grid?
The body alternates Gandaberunda and kamalam motifs in gold zari. The contrast between the figurative Gandaberunda and the floral kamalam gives the ordered kattam a more decorative rhythm.
Why does the blue look especially luminous?
The saturated Neelam-blue silk sits directly beneath fine gold zari lines, so movement creates repeated flashes of warm metallic light across the surface. The effect becomes stronger in evening and indoor festive lighting.
Can I request blouse stitching for this saree?
Yes. A 0.8 m running blouse piece is included, and custom blouse stitching is available through Idam Living. The blouse can be kept tonal in blue or designed to pick up one of the zari accents.
How long does a Zari Kattam saree like this spend on the loom?
For Idam Living’s Pack system, Zari Kattam uses an estimated 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing. Exact weaving time can vary by the individual saree.
