Multicolour Paalum Pazhamum Kattam Lightweight Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Arakku Zari Border

Multicolour Paalum Pazhamum Kattam Lightweight Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Arakku Zari Border

A festival of colour held in the geometry of the loom: turmeric yellow, young leaf green, arakku red and glowing orange meet in expansive kattam checks. Tiny gold buttas rest within the grid, while an ornate gold border and arakku pallu bring the splendour of old Kanchi.

❖ Woven by hand in Kanchipuram over 21 days on the loom — a piece of a centuries-old weaving tradition, made with certified pure silk.

Pure mulberry silk is woven here in a classic Paalum Pazhamum Kattam composition, with a joyful grid of broad kattam checks in turmeric yellow (manjal), leaf and emerald green (pachai), arakku red and warm sunset orange. Where the coloured bands intersect, they create deeper olive, russet and brownish-green tones. Small scattered gold-coloured circular floral buttas punctuate selected squares, allowing the woven checks to remain the centre of attention. The photographs do not establish a particular warp-weft ply count, korvai interlock, zari composition or other specialist loom construction. Handwoven for Idam Living by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu. A saree of this type represents approximately 21 active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A rich gold zari border composed of repeating circular medallions and peacock-like figures inside rectangular ornamental panels, finished with fine geometric bands. The pattern continues across alternating ground colours and is framed by deeper arakku-red silk.

Pallu: A contrasting deep arakku-red pallu with a large antique-gold zari field of tiny diamond-grid work, broad floral-vine ornament and a crisp triangular edge. The visible reverse fold shows a richly woven zari end, not a plain continuation of the checked body. Explore the Paalum Pazhamum collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Pair with an arakku-red or turmeric-yellow blouse and antique-finish gold jewellery. Keep the pallu open to show its dense diamond-grid zari field against the cheerful checks.

What is kattam in Kanchipuram weaving?
Kattam is the Tamil term for checks. This saree shows a large grid of interlocking coloured bands in yellow, green, arakku and orange, woven in the Paalum Pazhamum Kattam arrangement.
Which colours appear in the checks?
Turmeric yellow, leaf and emerald green, arakku red and sunset orange are visible, with darker mixed tones at intersections.
What motifs appear on the body and border?
Small gold-coloured circular floral buttas appear in selected checks. The ornate border has repeated medallion and peacock-like forms within geometric panels.
What does the pallu look like?
The contrast arakku-red pallu features dense antique-gold diamond-grid zari and a broad floral-vine band, making it more ornate than the checked body.
Is the saree supplied with a blouse piece?
Yes. Standard length is 6.3 m including a 0.8 m running blouse piece; the precise blouse layout should be confirmed on the physical saree.
