Mint Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Korvai Saree with Mayil and Kamalam Buttas

Mint Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Korvai Saree with Mayil and Kamalam Buttas

Fresh mint green gives this Korvai an unusually light, clear body before Vadamalli purple and coral orange enter at the border. Alternating Mayil and petite Kamalam buttas add small traditional notes across the silk, while the pallu shifts decisively into a deeper jewel-toned register.

❖ Woven by hand in Kanchipuram over 20 days on the loom — a piece of a centuries-old weaving tradition, made with certified pure silk.

The Korvai construction keeps the mint-green body distinct from the purple and coral-orange contrast border, allowing the colour transition to read sharply in the drape. Alternating Mayil and petite Kamalam zari buttas are spaced across the body. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 20 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The broad contrast border combines Vadamalli-purple and coral-orange silk with gold zari, using silk thread and zari together through the ornamental bands. Mayil motifs repeat within the border, finished by a slim dark-green outer edge.

Pallu: The pallu shifts into Vadamalli purple with a dense gold-zari geometric field and alternating ornamental motifs along the side, creating a rich jewel-toned counterpoint to the mint body.

Styling: A Vadamalli-purple, coral-orange, dark-green or antique-gold blouse will all work with the mint body. For a lighter look, choose pearls with one kemp accent; for evening wear, let the purple pallu show fully and add temple gold or a sculptural antique-gold earring.

What makes the colour contrast in this Korvai saree distinctive?
The body is a fresh mint green, while the border shifts into Vadamalli purple and coral orange with a dark-green outer edge. Korvai construction keeps those colour fields visually distinct, so the border reads clearly against the lighter body.
How are the Mayil and Kamalam buttas arranged?
Mayil and petite Kamalam zari motifs alternate across the mint-green body rather than forming one dense repeat. The spacing allows both motif types to remain individually visible while keeping the body visually light.
What is unusual about the border treatment?
The border combines coloured silk thread with gold zari rather than relying on one metallic field alone. Purple, coral orange and repeating Mayil motifs build a layered border before the saree moves into the richer purple pallu.
What blouse colours would make this saree feel contemporary?
A clean Vadamalli-purple or dark-green blouse will sharpen the mint body, while coral orange makes the contrast more festive. An antique-gold blouse can also work when the pallu is intended to be the main focus.
How should I care for the silk and zari after wearing it?
Air the saree briefly after wear, then store it folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight. Dry clean only and avoid applying perfume directly to the silk or zari so the woven surface is not exposed to unnecessary moisture or chemicals.
