Magenta and Gold Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree with Zari Kattam Body and Kamalam Butta Rettapet Border
Magenta and Gold Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree with Zari Kattam Body and Kamalam Butta Rettapet Border
Magenta is a colour of celebration across Tamil culture — worn for half-saree ceremonies, for Navarathri, for the festive season that belongs entirely to silk — and this Zari Kattam Kanjeevaram wears it with the precision and richness the colour deserves. Zari Kattam brings fine zari threads intersecting across the silk body to form a luminous grid, the gold sitting lightly over the magenta silk in a way that amplifies rather than overwhelms. Woven by our family's weavers in Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, where the ZK grid has been a practised form for generations.
The body is a vivid, saturated magenta in pure mulberry silk — deep and directional, self-colour throughout as Zari Kattam demands. The fine gold zari grid catches light across the entire body surface, and within its squares, Kamalam (lotus) butta in gold appear at intervals — the lotus a motif of particular auspiciousness in Kanchipuram weaving, carried here in the body rather than the border.
The border is self-colour magenta — the body's own depth continuing into the Rettapet structure, with twin parallel gold zari bands framing the border and inside, dense horizontal bands of gold zari carrying Yaanai (elephant) motifs and interlocking geometric patterns. The self-colour construction is sophisticated: the border does not contrast but intensifies, the gold doing all the work of articulation. For the woman who knows what she wants.
