Lime Green and Navy Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree with Kanchi Kattam and Gandaberunda Kudhirai Butta Border
Lime Green and Navy Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjeevaram Saree with Kanchi Kattam and Gandaberunda Kudhirai Butta Border
For a Philadelphia temple festival, she arrived in a saree that commanded the threshold — the lime green and navy blue pure silk Kanjeevaram, its Kanchi Kattam stripe body meeting a navy border alive with Gandaberunda and Kudhirai buttas in gold zari. The Kanchi Kattam weave is a traditional Kanchipuram construction where intersecting silk threads form a structured checkered grid across the body.
The body is woven in radiant lime green and canary yellow pure mulberry silk, the two colours intersecting in a fine Kanchi Kattam stripe that runs vertically across the drape — a structured, luminous surface that carries the warmth of both tones simultaneously. The weave creates a subtle dimensional quality that deepens beautifully under natural light.
The deep navy border is woven with individually placed Gandaberunda and Kudhirai buttas in antique gold zari — the mythological double-headed eagle and the flying horse, two of the most auspicious motifs in the Kanchipuram canon, rendered with the characteristic density and precision of the Kunnam weaver tradition. The navy pallu continues the Gandaberunda and Kudhirai procession in full repeat.
