Kumkumam Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Butta Saree with Annam–Mayil Thanga Zari Border
Kumkumam Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Butta Saree with Annam–Mayil Thanga Zari Border
A vivid Kumkumam Red gives this handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram saree its unmistakably ceremonial presence. Saturated and intensely luminous, the silk holds a clear temple-red depth through the folds while petite stylized bird buttas in thanga zari are scattered lightly across the open body.
❖ From raw silk to finished saree: 40 days, including about 16 of hand-weaving on the loom.

This is a confirmed Butta composition in pure mulberry silk, with individually placed stylized bird zari buttas set across an otherwise open silk field. A saree of this type typically represents approximately 16 active days on the loom, although individual weaving time varies. Woven for Idam Living by skilled artisan families in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. Read our story.
Body, Border and Pallu: The sparse body treatment is deliberate. Each small gold bird motif sits independently against the uninterrupted red silk, allowing the brilliance of the Kumkumam colour and the natural lustre of Pure Mulberry Silk to remain the focus. The effect is traditional without becoming visually crowded. The broad Pettu becomes considerably richer, with grand Annam–Mayil-inspired bird panels woven in warm thanga zari. Curved-neck forms and feathered details alternate with floral rosettes, while fine Seer bands, narrow geometric zari registers and a crisp Vanki-inspired temple edge give the border a disciplined old-Kanchi cadence. The pallu reaches the saree’s richest point, opening into a dense Poo-Kodi zari Jaal of closely woven floral forms and curling vines. Vertical ornamental registers carry repeating bird motifs alongside the floral field, creating an almost architectural layering of gold against Kumkumam Red. The result is festive, temple-rich and unmistakably heirloom in character. Explore the Butta collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.
Current Look
Nita Ambani’s recent deep-crimson saree look has brought richly saturated ceremonial reds back into focus. This Kanchipuram takes that colour story into classic temple-silk territory through vivid Kumkumam Red, petite thanga-zari bird buttas and a richly worked Annam–Mayil-inspired Pettu.
Styling: Pair it with the matching Kumkumam Red blouse for a strong monochromatic temple-silk treatment. Antique gold or traditional Kemp jewellery naturally echoes the thanga zari, while emeralds can introduce a classic green-red contrast for weddings, Deepavali or formal temple celebrations.
Blouse Piece Included: 0.8m running blouse piece. See our Blouse Stitching Guide.
