Kathiripoo Lavender and Peacock Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Varisaipet Border and Oosivaanam Zari

Kathiripoo Lavender and Peacock Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Varisaipet Border and Oosivaanam Zari

There is the softness of a Kathiripoo bloom in this lavender, and the cool depth of a peacock feather in the contrasting green. Between them, gold zari catches and releases the light with every fold.

❖ 16 days of loom work went into this saree, handwoven in Kanchipuram by generations of artisan weaver families using certified pure silk.

Woven in the Varisaipet tradition, the saree brings together several carefully proportioned gold-zari border registers, while its body takes on the oosivaanam effect of Vairaoosi: very fine, needle-like vertical zari filaments that shimmer as the silk moves. A tender Kathiripoo lavender body, like an orchid petal under morning light, is lined with fine shimmering oosivaanam zari filaments and spaced circular gold buttas. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Deep Mayil Kazhuthu peacock-green Varisaipet bands alternate lustrous gold zari registers with decorative floral, peacock and stylised geometric rows, finishing in a slim green edge.

Pallu: An unusually grand teal-green pallu, woven with a detailed diamond lattice filled with small gold ornament, an elaborate floral side register, and repeated zari panels that continue the border rhythm. Explore the Varisaipet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Keep the blouse in deep peacock green or muted lavender. A pair of antique-gold earrings and fresh white flowers allow the cool silk tones to lead; the wide green pallu can be displayed for a temple celebration or a reception.

Frequently bought together

What does Varisaipet mean in this Kanchipuram saree?
Varisaipet describes the traditional multi-band arrangement of border registers. In this kathiripoo lavender and peacock green saree, ornamental gold zari sections and finer dividers create a layered frame around the striped silk body.
What is the oosivaanam effect across the body?
Oosivaanam is the delicate vertical appearance made by thin, needle-like zari lines, related to the Vairaoosi visual vocabulary. Here those fine gold lines shimmer across the kathiripoo lavender and peacock green body without overpowering its spaced buttas.
What stands out when the pallu is worn over the shoulder?
The pallu contrasts with the slender body stripes through a much denser field of handwoven zari. This piece features an unusually grand teal-green pallu, woven with a detailed diamond lattice filled with small gold ornament, an elaborate floral side register, and repeated zari panels that continue the border rhythm.
Can Idam Living help design a blouse to complement these colours?
Yes. A 0.8 m running blouse piece is included, and Idam Living offers optional custom blouse stitching. A Mayil Kazhuthu green-inspired contrast or an understated gold blouse can be discussed according to your preferred neckline and sleeves.
Will the lavender and teal look different in different lighting?
The lavender can appear more rosy indoors, while the peacock-green contrast shows cooler blue notes under some light. Fine zari also reflects light differently as pleats move. Request daylight photos if you would like to compare tones before ordering.
