Karum Pachai Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Butta Saree with Mayil Gold Zari Border

A deep Karum Pachai Pure Silk Kanchipuram, almost black at first glance, like rain-soaked mango leaves at dusk or shaded betel leaves after monsoon rain. When light catches the silk, the green returns with a quiet forest depth, giving the saree a dark and exceptionally stately presence.

This is a confirmed Butta composition. Small classic gold zari motifs are deliberately spaced across the body, alternating between tiny floral and stylised traditional forms and small geometric square buttas. Against the near-black green, they appear less like continuous ornament and more like individual points of lamplight across temple stone.

Border: The lower edge develops into a substantial Kaal Irangiya-style gold zari treatment. Fine Reku lines and a delicate leaf-like rekku-style finish introduce the border before it opens into a commanding ornamental register of large Mayil-inspired figures.

The peacocks are richly articulated with scrolling foliage and floral infill, creating the visual weight of carved temple panels translated into silk. Against the Karum Pachai ground, the warm gold resembles aged temple brass suddenly illuminated by oil lamps.

Classification note: Kaal Irangiya-style is used here only to describe the broad visual treatment of the border. The owner-confirmed product classification remains Butta and must not be changed.

Pallu: The pallu becomes exceptionally dense, opening into an all-over diamond-lattice zari field with the appearance of an old-gold mesh. Along the side runs a vertical ornamental register of repeated maanga-inspired forms, held between narrow Reku lines and finished with a serrated edge. The repetition creates a measured, architectural rhythm unmistakably associated with grand Kanchipuram pallus.

Styling: Keep the blouse in Karum Pachai for an exceptionally rich tonal treatment, or introduce Antique Gold to echo the border. Temple jewellery, sculptural jhumkas or a substantial traditional necklace will suit the dark ceremonial character particularly well. Wear the pallu open so the dense diamond lattice and maanga register remain visible.
