Karu Neelam Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Butta Saree with Ilai Pachai Gold Zari Border

A wonderfully old-Kanchi colour story defines this handwoven pure silk Kanchipuram saree. The body is deep Karu Neelam, a midnight indigo-blue saturated like the sky just after dusk, while the contrast pettu moves into vivid Ilai Pachai and Kili Pachai, recalling young banana leaves washed clean by rain.

This is a confirmed Butta composition. Small green silk-thread buttas shaped like stylised paisley-floral sprigs sit at measured intervals across the blue body. Between them appear minute magenta-pink pinpoints, almost like bougainvillea buds scattered through a night garden. The tiny accent of pink gives warmth to the otherwise deep blue-and-green palette.

Border: The broad Ilai Pachai pettu is deliberately architectural. The green silk carries an exceptionally fine classic-gold zari micro-lattice, framed on either side by narrow reku registers with repeating stylised floral and leaf forms. The border feels disciplined rather than heavily ornamental, allowing the saturated colour contrast to do much of the visual work.

Pallu: The pallu continues the same old-Kanchi vocabulary of Ilai Pachai, Karu Neelam and fine gold geometry. Micro-lattice zari and narrow linear registers give the silk structure and rhythm, while dark blue to black-blue tassels return the eye to the midnight body colour.

Styling: Pair it with Karu Neelam for a deep tonal blouse, or repeat the vivid Ilai Pachai to make the contrast border more graphic. Antique-finish temple jewellery, restrained gold jhumkas or a single long necklace will complement the old-Kanchi palette beautifully. The small magenta accents also make a deep pink blouse an unexpected option for festive styling.
