Kanchana Deep Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Zari Kattam and Vanasringaram Butta
Kanchana Deep Brown Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Saree with Zari Kattam and Vanasringaram Butta
At a classical Bharatanatyam arangetram, when the disciple takes the stage for the first performance, the senior guru seated in the front row wears a saree that communicates her position without a single word — and this Kanjivaram saree from Idam Living, woven by the weaver families of Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, carries exactly that authority. It is woven in the Zari Kattam weave: fine zari threads intersect across the silk body to form a luminous grid, each line laid in 3 gram pure gold zari across the full expanse of Kanchana deep brown silk.
The body is Kanchana deep brown silk — a colour of immense ceremonial depth, warm and burnished, the kind of brown that the Kanchipuram loom has always understood as a colour of authority. Across it the Zari Kattam grid runs in pure gold — the lines forming a precise lattice that defines rectangular fields across the body's full length. Within each field, Vanasringaram Butta are woven in gold: Mayil (peacock), Yazhi (the mythical leonine figure of Dravidian temple iconography), and horse motifs alternating through the grid, the royal court procession of Kanchipuram's most ceremonial weaving vocabulary rendered across a field of deep brown and gold.
The border is a broad scarlet red silk field carrying elaborate Vanasringaram compositions in pure gold zari: Mayil and Yazhi rendered at full border scale, surrounded by layered geometric zari bands. The pallu opens into a grand Vanasringaram field of pure gold on red ground, the figures at full scale, structured for an impact that is both visually and ceremonially complete. A saree for the guru. A saree for the front row.
