Kanchana Blue and Gold Handwoven Pure Silk KanchiPattu Saree with Zari Kattam Grid and Mayil Butta

Kanchana Blue and Gold Handwoven Pure Silk KanchiPattu Saree with Zari Kattam Grid and Mayil Butta

Kanchana blue — the deep, golden-inflected indigo that Tamil weavers have long distinguished from ordinary royal blue — is a colour that has been cherished in Kanchipuram silk for generations. In this Zari Kattam KanchiPattu, the Kanchana blue body carries a fine gold grid and within its squares, the Mayil (peacock) — the most celebrated motif in the Kanchipuram canon — in large, detailed gold zari butta. Zari Kattam is the weave where fine zari threads intersect across the silk body to form a luminous grid, the gold catching light at every angle while the silk beneath maintains its pure, self-colour integrity. Woven by our family's weavers in Kunnam village near Kanchipuram.

The body is a rich Kanchana blue in pure mulberry silk — self-colour throughout, the blue deep and slightly warm in its particular shade. The Zari Kattam fine gold grid covers the body surface, and positioned within the grid's squares, large Mayil (peacock) butta appear at intervals across the length of the saree. Each peacock butta is sizeable and precisely rendered in gold zari — the bird's full form, tail, and bearing — in the traditional Kanchipuram style that generations of weavers have carried without variation.

The border is self-colour Kanchana blue with a broad plain gold zari band — an uncluttered composition that allows the body's ZK grid and Mayil butta to remain the centre of attention. The gold border band mirrors the grid's gold, connecting body and border in a single tonal register. Kanchana blue and gold: a KanchiPattu for the ceremony that calls for the real thing.
