Kaapi Brown and Turquoise Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Zari Buttas and Ornate Border

The dark depth of Kaapi brown meets the blue-green shimmer of a peacock feather in this jewel-bright Kanchipuram composition, threaded with little circles of gold.

Woven in the Varisaipet tradition, this pure mulberry silk saree sets its border into multiple carefully ordered pettu registers. Small zari buttas punctuate the brown body, making a measured pattern of repeating points; the ornament is not surface embroidery. Varisaipet denotes the multi-band border arrangement, not a claim about a separate joining construction. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Body: Deep Kaapi brown, the shade of freshly roasted coffee beans, serves as a quiet dark ground for columns of miniature circular gold zari buttas, alternating fine floral discs and chakram-like roundels. Their regular cadence creates an ornate grid without filling the silk between them.

Border: A radiant turquoise-blue pettu, somewhere between blue lagoon water and Mayil Kazhuthu peacock-neck blue-green, is stacked with shimmering gold registers, chevron lines and stylised scrolling floral bands. A broad flat zari band provides a resting place between finer patterned stripes.

Pallu: A luminous turquoise pallu is filled with an almost continuous fine diamond and square gold lattice. A tall vertical floral register and multiple rows of delicate gold braid-like patterning resolve into the wide turquoise-and-gold end border. Explore the Varisaipet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Pair the dark coffee body with a turquoise blouse or choose a clean antique-gold silk blouse. Gold jhumkas and a neatly pleated front allow the turquoise pettu to read clearly. The strong contrast is striking for a cultural gala or family reception.

Frequently bought together

What does Varisaipet mean in this Kanchipuram saree?
Varisaipet refers to the traditional multi-band arrangement of border details. In this kaapi brown and turquoise blue saree, layered zari stripes and ornamental registers form a distinctive rhythm along the pettu.
How are the small gold buttas arranged across this saree?
Deep Kaapi brown, the shade of freshly roasted coffee beans, serves as a quiet dark ground for columns of miniature circular gold zari buttas, alternating fine floral discs and chakram-like roundels. Their regular cadence creates an ornate grid without filling the silk between them. The motifs are woven into the fabric rather than embroidered afterwards.
What makes the pallu of this particular saree special?
A luminous turquoise pallu is filled with an almost continuous fine diamond and square gold lattice. A tall vertical floral register and multiple rows of delicate gold braid-like patterning resolve into the wide turquoise-and-gold end border.
Can Idam Living create a blouse to suit these colours?
Yes. The saree includes a 0.8 m running blouse piece, and optional custom blouse stitching is available. A turquoise blue accent can be considered for a contrasting blouse; the final design and available fabric are discussed with our team.
How should I care for its zari work?
Dry clean only. Keep the saree folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight, refold periodically, and avoid perfume directly on the silk or zari.
