Woven in the Zari Kattam tradition, Deep kaapi brown silk with a hint of aubergine carries a fine gold zari kattam grid and well-spaced petite round gold buttas. The hue is earthy and rich, reminiscent of freshly roasted coffee in shadow. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: A structured thanga-gold Varisaipet border brings together ornate woven animal-and-floral-style registers and slim horizontal veldhari bands, finished with a slender kesari-orange selvedge. The same Varisaipet-veldhari border language continues on the running blouse piece.

Pallu: The grand pallu is densely covered in gold zari: patterned diamond grids, tiny floral medallions, clustered ornaments and long, narrow woven registers. This intricate expanse is striking against the dark coffee silk.

Styling: The matching kaapi-brown blouse is beautiful with its gold-banded sleeves and a high boat neck. For a bolder pairing, select kesari orange in matte silk, with the border at the cuff. Wear brushed-gold jhumkas, a dark bindi and a sleek braid.

Frequently bought together

How does Zari Kattam show up on the kaapi-brown body?
Fine gold lines make a restrained grid across the coffee-brown silk; small round buttas provide occasional points of gold. The overall effect is textured rather than densely patterned.
What colours are woven into the border?
The border is predominantly warm metallic gold over deep brown, with an orange selvedge reminiscent of kesari, the saffron-orange shade.
Can I stitch the blouse with the same Varisaipet border?
Yes, the intended running blouse design continues the coordinated Varisaipet and veldhari border. A cuff or sleeve-edge treatment will frame the dark silk beautifully.
Would this work for an evening ceremony?
The dark body and bright gold pallu make it well suited to evening ceremonies, receptions and cultural gatherings. A simple blouse allows the detailed pallu to remain the focus.
How should the zari be stored between wears?
Dry clean only and store folded in breathable muslin away from direct sunlight. Change the folds occasionally and keep perfume off the metallic threads.
