Ivory and Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Saree with Maanga Butta and Varisaipet Mubbagam Border

Ivory and Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Saree with Maanga Butta and Varisaipet Mubbagam Border

There are sarees for every occasion, and then there are sarees for the occasion that is spoken about for years afterward. This ivory Varisaipet Kanjipuram — with its elaborate Mubbagam border carrying Yaanai, Gandaberunda, and the full vocabulary of Kanchipuram temple iconography — belongs to the second category. Varisaipet is the traditional multi-band border structure with repeated woven lines, each band a distinct composition in gold zari that builds toward a pallu of extraordinary ceremonial richness. Woven in Kunnam village by our family's weavers, for whom this level of border complexity represents the full expression of the craft.

The body is a pure, luminous ivory — off-white mulberry silk that holds its light without competing with the border's magnificence. Scattered across the ivory ground, Maanga (mango/paisley) butta in gold zari appear at measured intervals, each one a tiny act of weaving precision. Small Kili (parrot) butta accompany them, the two motifs together forming the classic Kanchipuram butta pairing.

The Varisaipet border is where this saree earns its price and its place in a serious collection. Multiple bands of gold zari carry Yaanai (temple elephant) processions, Gandaberunda double-headed eagles, and geometric temple motifs across a maroon and dark forest green ground — the whole pallu a miniature temple frieze in silk and gold. The Mubbagam triple-section construction means border, body, and pallu are each distinct but structurally unified. For a bride's trousseau, for a daughter's wedding, for the moment that deserves the finest.
