Emerald and Parrot Green Shot Colour Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchi Pattu Saree with Mayil Chakram Butta and Korvai Border
Emerald and Parrot Green Shot Colour Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchi Pattu Saree with Mayil Chakram Butta and Korvai Border
She stepped into the light and the saree shifted — green deepening to emerald, lifting to parrot, the two colours moving across the silk the way light moves across water — and the room noticed. This is a handwoven pure silk Kanchi Pattu saree in shot colour emerald and parrot green, woven on the traditional looms of Kanchipuram by artisan weaver families with generations of craft in their hands, in the Korvai technique as explored in our guide to the Korvai Kanchipuram silk saree weave.
The body is woven in a shot colour technique — where warp threads in emerald green and weft threads in parrot green intersect across the silk, creating a living double shade that shifts between two distinct greens as the light and angle change. This is one of Kanchipuram weaving's most celebrated optical effects, achieved entirely through the choice and positioning of coloured silk threads on the loom. Across this luminous shot colour ground, Mayil Chakram Butta in contrasting silk thread — orange and deep green alternating — are scattered in an allover rhythm, each a peacock medallion rendered entirely in coloured silk without zari, in the Pattupet tradition of silk-only ornamentation.
The border is a multicolour Varisaipet band in maroon, teal and gold zari — woven separately on the loom and structurally interlocked with the body — the Korvai technique, where body and border are woven separately and structurally interlocked on the loom, producing a strong seamless junction between contrasting sections and richly defined borders. The pallu continues the multicolour border palette with gold zari floral bands, completing a saree of rare chromatic complexity.
