Pure mulberry silk is woven here in a classic Rettapet composition, with two parallel woven bands creating a layered architectural frame around the silk body. Rettapet is the traditional Kanchipuram double-border arrangement: the narrow inner band and the broad ornamental band are each read on their own yet work together as one frame, which is what separates it from a single broad zari border or a Korvai interlock. The brilliant leaf-to-emerald green body, reminiscent of fresh Pachai green with vivid grassy, jewel-toned undertones, is decorated with small gold zari buttas spaced at measured intervals; the motifs appear as stylised floral or rounded ornamental forms and lend a quiet golden rhythm to the bright ground, while the natural sheen of the silk keeps the green luminous. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this type represents approximately 18 active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.
Border: The broad deep plum Rettapet border, a dark aubergine-purple with an Arakku-plum influence, carries two richly woven antique-gold zari bands. Repeating manga or paisley-inspired motifs appear within decorative arched compartments, accompanied by smaller floral details and fine geometric edging, and a row of triangular temple-inspired zari forms runs along the border's upper edge. The alternation of plum silk and gold ornament gives the border a strong, heirloom-like presence, and the antique-gold zari acts as a warm bridge between the two contrasting silk colours.
Pallu: The deep plum pallu is extensively woven with antique-gold zari. A diagonal diamond-lattice field occupies a substantial portion of the pallu, accompanied by long vertical panels of floral-geometric and paisley-inspired motifs, while the lower portion continues the border vocabulary with repeated arches and scrolling forms. The pallu balances geometric precision with traditional floral ornament. Explore the Rettapet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.
Styling: Treat the antique-gold zari as the third colour: an antique-gold brocade blouse with a boat neck ties the emerald body to the plum border. Wear the lattice pallu in broad pleats over the shoulder, add a single long antique-gold haram, and finish with a braid wound with jasmine.
