Deep Violet Blue Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Rettapet Saree with Annapakshi Gold Zari Border

A deep Violet Blue Pure Silk Kanchipuram, saturated with the colour of the sky at the very end of dusk, when blue begins to merge into violet and the remaining light seems to glow from within the colour itself. In deeper folds, the silk moves toward indigo-violet, giving the saree remarkable tonal depth without becoming black or navy.

A fine Arakku-red selvedge runs along the edge like a narrow stroke of kumkum against the violet-blue silk, giving the saree an unmistakably old-school Kanchipuram finish.

The body is intentionally restrained. Small classic gold zari buttas are spaced across the field in rounded floral and chakram-like forms alongside petite stylised traditional motifs. Against the deep violet-blue ground, they appear almost like individual points of temple-lamp gold rather than continuous ornament.

Rettapet border: The border gives the saree its strongest architectural character. Distinct horizontal zari registers are separated by fine Reku-style lines, creating a disciplined traditional structure along the edge.

The principal gold register carries repeating Annapakshi-style bird forms surrounded by curling vines and leaves. Narrow zari divisions organise the ornament, while a small triangular muggu-style temple edge and fine Arakku-red selvedge sharpen the transition between the Deep Violet Blue silk and warm classic gold.

Rettapet: In Kanchipuram border vocabulary, Rettapet refers to the strongly articulated linear border treatment created through distinct zari registers. Here, the repeated bands, fine Reku divisions and clearly framed bird register give the border its measured Rettapet identity.

Pallu: The pallu becomes considerably more architectural. Long vertical zari panels alternate between ornamental floral-vine registers, repeated stylised bird forms and geometric Reku divisions. Rather than forming a continuous brocade field, the zari is arranged in measured longitudinal bands, recalling carved pillars and ornamental registers in an old South Indian mandapam.

Styling: Continue the body with Deep Violet Blue for a stately tonal treatment, or pick up the fine selvedge with an Arakku blouse for a more traditional Kanchi contrast. Antique-finish temple jewellery, warm gold jhumkas or one sculptural necklace will complement the bird border without overwhelming the restrained body. Keep the pallu open enough for its vertical registers to remain visible.
