Deep Plum and Arakku Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Varisaipet Border and Oosivaanam Zari

Deep Plum and Arakku Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Varisaipet Border and Oosivaanam Zari

The shade of ripe jamun meets the red of old Kanchipuram lacquer and the glint of temple brass. Fine gold threads fall like a passing shower across this plum silk, before the Arakku border gathers the light.

❖ Handwoven over 16 days on the loom in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. Certified pure silk, woven by artisan families who support their weaving village.

Woven in the Varisaipet tradition, the saree brings together several carefully proportioned gold-zari border registers, while its body takes on the oosivaanam effect of Vairaoosi: very fine, needle-like vertical zari filaments that shimmer as the silk moves. A dark Naval Pazham plum body, almost like ripe jamun skin in shade, carries close-set antique-gold oosivaanam lines and widely spaced gold peacock-inspired circular buttas. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: Arakku lacquer-red frames the plum silk in a Varisaipet arrangement of finely separated horizontal gold zari rows and a broad ornamental register with floral scrolls and peacock imagery.

Pallu: A richly handwoven Arakku-red and gold pallu with repeating gold bands, dense ornamental floral and peacock detailing, and a lustrous contrast to the restrained striped body. Explore the Varisaipet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Pair with an Arakku silk blouse, old-gold jhumkas and a low jasmine bun. Let the wide red border sit visibly across the pleats, and carry the richly worked pallu over one shoulder for an evening wedding or family ceremony.

Frequently bought together

What does Varisaipet mean in this Kanchipuram saree?
Varisaipet describes the traditional multi-band arrangement of border registers. In this deep plum and arakku red saree, ornamental gold zari sections and finer dividers create a layered frame around the striped silk body.
What is the oosivaanam effect across the body?
Oosivaanam is the delicate vertical appearance made by thin, needle-like zari lines, related to the Vairaoosi visual vocabulary. Here those fine gold lines shimmer across the deep plum and arakku red body without overpowering its spaced buttas.
What stands out when the pallu is worn over the shoulder?
The pallu contrasts with the slender body stripes through a much denser field of handwoven zari. This piece features a richly handwoven arakku-red and gold pallu with repeating gold bands, dense ornamental floral and peacock detailing, and a lustrous contrast to the restrained striped body.
Can Idam Living help design a blouse to complement these colours?
Yes. A 0.8 m running blouse piece is included, and Idam Living offers optional custom blouse stitching. A Arakku red-inspired contrast or an understated gold blouse can be discussed according to your preferred neckline and sleeves.
How should I preserve the silk and its gold detailing?
Dry clean only, store folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight, and avoid spraying perfume directly on the silk or zari. Refold periodically to avoid keeping the same crease in place for long periods.
