Deep Plum and Marigold Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Gandaberunda Butta Border
Deep Plum and Marigold Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Saree with Gandaberunda Butta Border
The Gandaberunda — the two-headed eagle of ancient weaver tradition — appears in Kanchipuram silk as a motif of power and protection. On this deep plum Kancheepuram, it anchors the marigold border in a single, large gold zari butta of extraordinary detail, the feathers and form of the double-headed bird rendered with the precision that only handloom weaving allows. Woven in the Butta tradition with the Gandaberunda as the defining motif, this saree is a collector's piece as much as a celebration garment.
The body is deep plum — the purple-maroon of dusk before the lamps are lit — and across it runs a fine Zari Kattam gold grid where fine zari threads intersect across the silk body to form a luminous grid, giving the body a structured depth that the deep colour amplifies rather than obscures. Small Kili buttas in gold zari are scattered across the field, each one a precise bird form placed with the weaver's characteristic restraint.
The marigold border is wide and ceremonially grounded — carrying the large Gandaberunda butta in gold zari as its central motif, flanked by Varisaipet bands that give the border its multi-layered structure. The pallu extends the marigold with the same Gandaberunda in a broader, more expansive arrangement.
A marigold or deep plum blouse echoes the body-border contrast directly. Antique gold jewellery with bird motifs — peacock chains, Gandaberunda pendants, and broad bangles — honours the weave's iconography. For temple occasions, Navarathri, or any celebration where the saree carries meaning beyond decoration.
