Deep Mulberry Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Vintage Ornate Zari Border

Deep Mulberry Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Zari Kattam Saree with Vintage Ornate Zari Border

Dense, saturated and unapologetically traditional, this deep mulberry Kanjipuram carries the visual richness associated with vintage Kanchipuram silks. The kattam grid holds the body in order, while ornamental buttas, stacked zari bands and a heavily worked pallu create a saree that feels collected rather than newly decorative.

❖ 16 days on the loom, handwoven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu by artisan weaver families — every purchase supports their village and this centuries-old tradition.

The Zari Kattam body is built around a strong gold grid, with alternating ornamental floral and paisley-like buttas placed within the checks. Against the deep mulberry ground, the zari reads warm and antique, reinforcing the saree’s dense vintage character. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The border is built in stacked handwoven registers, combining broad gold-zari panels with traditional floral and bird-inspired bands. The repetition gives the lower edge the weight and density of a classic vintage Kanchipuram.

Pallu: The pallu is exceptionally rich, with a dense geometric zari lattice and multiple framed registers that continue the border’s old-Kanchi vocabulary across the shoulder.

Styling: This saree needs very little additional ornament. Pair it with a plain deep-mulberry blouse, antique gold jewellery and a clean centre-parted bun, or contrast it with muted green for a more traditional Kanchi palette. Wear the pallu open so the dense zari work remains fully visible.

Frequently bought together

How does Zari Kattam shape the look of this vintage-style Kanjipuram?
The zari grid gives the body a disciplined geometric structure, allowing the individual ornamental buttas to sit clearly within each section. On the deep mulberry ground, the grid also amplifies the antique-gold glow.
What motifs are used on this saree?
The body carries alternating ornamental floral and paisley-like zari motifs within the kattam. The border and pallu add layered floral and bird-inspired zari bands, creating the denser vocabulary associated with older Kanchipuram compositions.
What makes the saree feel vintage?
It is the combination of a deep saturated ground, strong zari-grid body, stacked border registers and a densely worked pallu. None of those details alone defines age, but together they create the visual weight of a classic old-Kanchi style.
Can Idam Living create a blouse that keeps the vintage character?
Yes. The included 0.8 m running blouse piece can be custom stitched through Idam Living. A restrained neckline and either tonal mulberry or muted green detailing would keep attention on the saree’s dense woven borders.
What is the recommended care for the zari-heavy pallu?
Dry clean only and store folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight. Refold periodically so the same crease does not carry the zari weight for long periods, and avoid direct perfume or moisture on the silk and zari.
