Deep Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Rettapet Saree with Veldhari Zari Weave

Deep Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjivaram Rettapet Saree with Veldhari Zari Weave

This deep maroon Kanjivaram is quiet through the body and elaborate at the finish. Fine zari bands travel steadily across the silk before the pallu expands into broader ornamental registers in warm gold.

❖ Woven in Kanchipuram over 18 days on the loom, using Silk Mark certified pure silk, by artisans who have handed this craft down through generations.

Rettapet gives the saree its twin-register border structure, while the Veldhari treatment appears as repeated horizontal zari banding across the body. The effect is linear and traditional, with the visual density reserved for the pallu. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 18 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: The maroon border is structured with warm gold zari registers and a narrow green selvedge accent visible along the edge.

Pallu: The pallu is substantially more ornate, combining vertical zari registers, traditional patterned bands and a dense gold field.

Styling: Keep the blouse in deep maroon for an uninterrupted tonal look, or choose antique gold for a more formal finish. Temple-style jewellery or a single substantial necklace will complement the rich pallu without crowding the fine Veldhari body.

Frequently bought together

How does Rettapet change the look of this maroon saree?
The traditional twin-register border gives the edge a stronger frame and creates a clean transition from the fine Veldhari body to the richer pallu.
Why does the body look more restrained than the pallu?
The body relies on repeated horizontal zari lines, while the pallu carries a much denser concentration of woven gold registers. The contrast lets the shoulder drape become the visual focal point.
Would this saree work for temple and festive occasions?
Yes. The deep maroon, warm gold and traditional border structure suit festive occasions, ceremonies, temple gatherings and family celebrations without relying on an overly busy body.
Can I request a custom blouse through Idam Living?
Yes. A custom blouse can be made to your measurements. For this saree, a clean maroon blouse or an antique-gold blouse would both work well with the warm zari.
Are small handloom variations normal?
Minor differences in tension, yarn joins or placement can occur naturally in handwoven silk. These should be distinguished from actual stains, tears or significant defects, which are not simply part of handmade character.
