Deep Maroon and Bottle Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Floral Butta and Kolam Korvai Border
Deep Maroon and Bottle Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Floral Butta and Kolam Korvai Border
For a girl's first day at a classical music academy, the senior teacher arrives in a silk that communicates without words what kind of institution this is — and a saree that speaks with the weight of tradition while moving with the ease of a teaching day is the only choice that makes sense. This Kanchipuram lightweight saree from Idam Living, woven by the weaver families of Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, is that saree. Woven using finer 2-ply and 3-ply mulberry silk yarns, it carries lighter weight and easier movement while retaining full Kanchipuram craftsmanship — the same loom, the same silk, the same weaver; only the weight changes.
The body is deep maroon silk — a colour of settled authority — and across it Floral Butta are scattered in gold zari: full-bloom motifs, each one woven in radial gold detail against the deep maroon ground, catching light with a warmth that deepens rather than competes with the body colour. The Korvai construction joins body and border structurally on the loom: body and border woven separately and interlocked, producing a strong seamless junction between contrasting sections.
The border is bottle green silk, carrying a Kolam border in gold zari — the intricate geometric kolam pattern woven continuously along the border in a dense gold register, its repeating forms drawing from the same visual tradition as the floor kolam drawn at the threshold of a Tamil home. The pallu opens into the bottle green ground with the Kolam compositions at full pallu scale, the deep maroon and bottle green Korvai combination one of Kanchipuram's most enduring ceremonial contrasts.
