Deep Kathiripoo Purple and Emerald Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Varisaipet Saree with Zari Mayil Chakram Buttas

Deep Kathiripoo Purple and Emerald Green Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Varisaipet Saree with Zari Mayil Chakram Buttas

Like the last purple light over temple stone, Kathiripoo silk meets the deep green of rain-washed leaves. Petite golden mayil chakram buttas glimmer across the body; rows of emerald silk thread and zari frame a seer pallu rich with fine, cascading ornament.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree spent roughly 16 active days on the loom, in addition to dyeing, threading and finishing.

Woven in the Varisaipet tradition, this saree draws its measured rhythm from multiple border rows in silk thread and gold-toned zari. Small mayil chakram zari buttas are set across the body. Handwoven by artisan weaver families in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, for Idam Living. A saree of this complexity represents approximately 16 or more active days on the loom, with exact weaving time varying according to the individual saree. Read our story.

Border: multiple dark emerald and teal-green silk-thread bands alternating with closely woven gold zari floral and geometric rows. The traditional varisaipet combines panels of silk thread with repeated gold-toned zari registers.

Pallu: an elaborate seer pallu of long, slender gold zari columns, delicate zigzags and ornamental paisley-inspired registers. The seer arrangement is elaborate and densely ornamented in gold-toned zari.

Styling: Pair with an emerald silk blouse with antique-gold jhumkas and a low bun accented by jasmine. The small body buttas keep the field open, giving the varisaipet borders and rich pallu room to stand out at weddings, temple functions or classical-music gatherings.

Frequently bought together

What is Varisaipet in this deep kathiripoo purple and emerald green saree?
Varisaipet refers to the ordered, multi-band arrangement along the border. Here alternating silk-thread and gold-toned zari rows create its layered traditional frame.
What details decorate the body and border of this deep kathiripoo purple and emerald green saree?
The deep aubergine kathiripoo purple, framed with emerald and peacock-green silk bands and antique-gold zari body has petite mayil chakram zari buttas, while the border uses multiple dark emerald and teal-green silk-thread bands alternating with closely woven gold zari floral and geometric rows. These are woven details rather than applied embroidery.
What makes the pallu different from the body?
The body is comparatively open and dotted with small buttas. The seer pallu is much more ornate, with an elaborate seer pallu of long, slender gold zari columns, delicate zigzags and ornamental paisley-inspired registers.
Can Idam Living design a blouse to complement these Varisaipet rows?
Yes. The saree includes a 0.8 m running blouse piece, and custom blouse stitching is available separately. A blouse can take inspiration from the violet silk and zari details, with sleeve and neckline options discussed before stitching.
How should I care for the zari on this deep kathiripoo purple and emerald green Kanchipuram?
Dry clean only, store folded in soft muslin away from direct sunlight, and avoid spraying perfume on the silk or zari. Refold periodically so the same creases are not held for long periods.
