A deep kaapi-brown silk, with the warmth of roasted coffee beans, wet earth after rain and the reddish undertone of aged rosewood. The silk shifts between cocoa, mahogany and muted aubergine in the folds. Handwoven gold floral zari buttas sit against a quiet tonal geometric ground, like small gilded blossoms emerging at dusk.
Border. An expansive antique-gold border is crowned by scalloped, temple-arch-like floral ornamentation. Beneath it, elaborate foliage and animal forms unfold in a richly detailed garden procession. The warm gold contrasts beautifully with the dark kaapi-brown body without losing the depth of its earthy palette.
Pallu. The grand pallu glows with a densely handwoven gold diamond-grid field and several successive bands of intricate floral, paisley-like and geometric zari work. The contrast of dark coffee silk and glowing antique gold gives this saree a distinctly old-Kanchi grandeur.
Styling. Style with a muted antique-gold, sandalwood or deep aubergine blouse; the rich border can be the centrepiece for a reception or festive dinner.
