This is a confirmed Zari Kattam composition in pure mulberry silk, with fine 2 gram gold zari lines crossing the body in both directions to form its characteristic checked grid. A saree of this type typically represents approximately 6 to 10 active days on the loom, although individual weaving time varies. Woven for Idam Living by skilled artisan families in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. Read our story.

Body, Border and Pallu: The body is woven in the traditional Zari Kattam construction, with fine 2 gram gold zari lines crossing the silk in both directions to form a disciplined field of small checks; against the dark aubergine ground, these lines catch the light quietly, giving the silk texture and luminosity without interrupting its rich colour. The restrained geometry of the body gives way to a magnificent Vermilion Red border, where large traditional Yanai, or elephant, motifs are intricately rendered in gold zari and framed between ornamental registers of floral and classical woven details, their scale giving the border a particularly ceremonial presence, with a fine dark green edge providing one final colour note against the red and gold. The pallu is exceptionally rich, opening into an expansive field of gold zari on Vermilion Red silk, where minute geometric weaving creates an almost continuous golden surface, while elaborate traditional motif bands frame the composition. The contrast is what makes this saree especially memorable — a dark jewel-toned checked body followed by an intensely luminous red and gold border and pallu, architectural in the body and unabashedly traditional at the edge. Explore the Zari Kattam collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: A Vermilion Red blouse would make the contrast border the focus, while a Deep Aubergine blouse gives the saree a more continuous evening look. Antique gold jewellery or traditional temple jewellery works particularly well with the large Yanai motifs.
