Dark Maroon and Gold Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchi Pattu Saree with Kamalam Butta Jaal and Rettapet Border
Dark Maroon and Gold Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchi Pattu Saree with Kamalam Butta Jaal and Rettapet Border
A saree that commands without demanding — dark maroon in pure silk, its entire body given over to an all-over Kamalam butta jaal in gold zari, the lotus repeated in measured rows until the body becomes a garden of gold against deep red-brown. This is the Kanchi Pattu that a grandmother might have worn to a child's first ceremony, that a daughter inherits and wears to her own. Woven by our family's weavers in Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, where the dense butta jaal represents some of the most time-intensive work on the loom.
The body is a rich dark maroon — oxblood-deep, ceremonially authoritative, a colour that has been associated with auspicious occasions in Tamil tradition for centuries. Across this ground, Kamalam (lotus) butta in gold zari are arranged in a dense all-over jaal: row upon row of the sacred flower, each one individually woven, the whole body a field of gold lotuses that catches light from every direction. The butta are small and precise — the density of the jaal is the achievement, not the scale of any individual motif.
The border is a broad sweep of gold in Rettapet construction — twin parallel lines framing it at the edges, and within that frame, dense gold zari bands carrying Yaanai (elephant) and Kamalam motifs in procession. The Rettapet structure gives the border a stately, even composition that complements the busy richness of the jaal body. Dark maroon and gold: for the ceremony that calls for gravitas.
