Crimson Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Zari Kattam Saree with Sorgavasal Mayil and Manga Border

Crimson Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram Zari Kattam Saree with Sorgavasal Mayil and Manga Border

Crimson Red gives this handwoven Pure Silk Kancheepuram saree an unmistakably ceremonial presence. The colour is saturated and jewel-like rather than orange-red, becoming deeper and more dramatic wherever the silk falls into shadow. Fine gold zari lines intersect across the body to create the characteristic structure of Zari Kattam, adding a measured gleam without overwhelming the richness of the red.

❖ Handwoven to order over 42 days — dyeing through to the final weave, no two pieces identical.

This is a confirmed Zari Kattam composition in pure mulberry silk, with fine gold zari lines intersecting vertically and horizontally across the crimson red body to create its checked structure. A saree of this type typically represents approximately 6 to 10 active days on the loom, although individual weaving time varies. Woven for Idam Living by skilled artisan families in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. Read our story.

Body, Border and Pallu: The Zari Kattam construction gives the body its beautifully ordered rhythm. Fine metallic lines travel vertically and horizontally through the silk, creating a subtle checked surface that becomes increasingly visible as the saree moves under light. From a distance the body remains strongly red; closer to the textile, the zari structure reveals an additional layer of precision and texture. The border is considerably more commanding. Broad gold zari registers frame the saree with a repeating Sorgavasal border combining Mayil (peacock) and Manga (mango) motifs. The motifs are large enough to read clearly from a distance, while narrow geometric edges keep the border crisp. Against the uninterrupted Crimson Red ground, the gold feels luminous and architectural rather than overly busy. The pallu becomes richer still, opening into a dense field of gold zari with a fine chevron-like geometric texture and broader ornamental registers running along its edge. Explore the Zari Kattam collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Style it with deep bottle green, peacock teal or antique gold for a saturated counterpoint. Traditional gold jewellery and a sleek centre-parted low bun or long polished braid will keep the look composed while allowing the dramatic red and gold weaving to remain the focus.
