Crimson and Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Maanga Butta and Sorgavaasal Mayil Rettapet Border
Crimson and Maroon Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram Saree with Maanga Butta and Sorgavaasal Mayil Rettapet Border
The Sorgavaasal Mayil — the peacock at the threshold of heaven — is among the most sacred motifs in Kanchipuram weaving, reserved for sarees of particular ceremonial significance. Its appearance in the pallu of this crimson Kanchipuram signals a saree designed for the moments that matter: a wedding, a seemantham, a daughter's arangetram, the occasion for which no lesser silk will serve. Woven by our family's weavers in Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, where the Sorgavaasal Mayil is rendered from memory, as it has been for generations.
The body is a deep, rich crimson in pure mulberry silk — the colour of vermillion, of festival, of the bride at her most auspicious. Scattered across the crimson ground, Maanga (mango/paisley) and Kamalam (lotus) butta appear in gold zari at measured intervals, each one a small, precise act of weaving. The two motifs together — the teardrop and the lotus — are the classic pairing of Kanchipuram body decoration.
The border transitions into a deeper maroon — a brown-tinged dark red that reads against the crimson body as a rich, close contrast — with a Rettapet structure carrying the Sorgavaasal Mayil peacock in its widest band. The peacock here is large and elaborate, its tail and form rendered in fine gold zari with the detail that only a loom weaver of long practice can achieve. The pallu carries the peacock forward in the gold zari border composition. For the ceremony that asks for the absolute best.
