Coral Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Saree with Mayil Chakram Butta and Ganga Jamuna Border
Coral Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanjipuram Saree with Mayil Chakram Butta and Ganga Jamuna Border
Coral red in Kanchipuram silk is the colour of the late afternoon sun — warm, vivid, and deeply festive without the full ceremony of arakku red. This Kanjipuram is woven in the Varisaipet tradition, the traditional multi-band border structure with repeated woven lines, the body a plain coral red pure mulberry silk carrying the distinctive Mayil chakram Butta across its full expanse. Woven by our family’s artisan weaver families in Kunnam village near Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu.
The coral red body carries Mayil chakram Butta throughout — the peacock eye motif rendered in silk thread interwoven with zari, the two materials working together to create a butta of unusual texture and depth. The combination of gold zari and silk thread within the same butta gives the coral red body a surface richness that pure zari alone cannot achieve, the peacock eye medallion catching light differently depending on whether the silk thread or the zari catches the angle.
The Ganga Jamuna Korvai border — where body and border are woven separately and structurally interlocked on the loom, with two contrasting colours woven into the border field — brings together ivory and blush silk in the border ground, the dual-colour Ganga Jamuna structure creating a soft, luminous border of great refinement. Within this field, Mayil chakram Butta in silk thread interwoven with zari continue the body’s butta vocabulary into the border. The pallu continues the same Ganga Jamuna structure with Mayil chakram Butta in the full border width.
Styling: Coral red with a Ganga Jamuna blush border is an unusual and beautiful Kanchipuram combination — the warmth of the coral body against the pale, luminous border creates a saree of great visual refinement. It suits festive occasions, engagement ceremonies, and Navarathri. A coral red silk blouse keeps the body self-colour; an ivory or blush blouse picks up the Ganga Jamuna border palette. Pair with rose gold or antique gold jewellery.
