Chilli Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchi Pattu Rettapet Saree with Ganga Jamuna Border and Veldhari Stripes

Chilli Red Handwoven Pure Silk Kanchi Pattu Rettapet Saree with Ganga Jamuna Border and Veldhari Stripes

Chilli Red gives this handwoven Pure Silk Kanchi Pattu Rettapet saree its first burst of colour, but the real beauty lies in how many different rhythms are woven into the composition. Across the body, Veldhari stripes alternate fine gold zari with deeper silk-thread lines, creating a beautifully disciplined striped field. The pattern feels graphic from a distance and much more intricate up close, where metallic and silk lines move independently with the light.

❖ Every saree is made to order. 43 days pass between dyeing the silk and the finished weave, roughly 18 of it spent on the loom.

This is a confirmed Rettapet composition in pure mulberry silk, finished with contrasting Ganga Jamuna borders — Chilli Red meeting a warm Burnt Orange counterpart — and Veldhari stripes woven from alternating gold zari and silk-thread lines through the body. A saree of this type typically represents approximately 7 to 12 active days on the loom, although individual weaving time varies. Woven for Idam Living by skilled artisan families in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. Read our story.

Body, Border and Pallu: The saree is finished with a beautiful Ganga Jamuna border, one of the most distinctive traditional colour treatments in Indian handloom. Rather than repeating the same colour on both edges, the two sides are deliberately different: saturated Chilli Red meets a warm Burnt Orange counterpart, giving the drape two contrasting edges and allowing the colour balance to change depending on how the saree is pleated and worn. Look more closely at the border and the smaller details begin to emerge. Rudhraksham zari elements punctuate the edging, their compact repeating form creating a delicate gold punctuation against the saturated silk. Fine zari lines and the striped Veldhari body keep the saree structured, while the Rettapet composition gives the borders a distinctive presence without making the body feel crowded. The pallu changes the scale completely, opening into a richly woven gold zari field arranged through a grid of repeated paisley forms. Against the orange and red silk, the geometric framework gives the traditional paisley vocabulary an almost architectural order. Explore the Rettapet collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Style it with a deep bottle-green or muted aubergine blouse for a saturated counterpoint, or choose Burnt Orange to echo the Ganga Jamuna edge. Antique-gold jewellery and a centre-parted low bun or long polished braid will keep the look traditional while letting the unusual stripes and dual-colour borders remain the focus.
