Cerulean & Royal Blue Pure Silk Kanchipuram Butta Saree with Yaanai Zari Pallu

Cerulean & Royal Blue Pure Silk Kanchipuram Butta Saree with Yaanai Zari Pallu

Two saturated blues shape the character of this handwoven Pure Silk Kanchipuram. Deep Royal Blue forms the quieter field, while a luminous Cerulean Blue introduces a striking tonal contrast. Together they create a layered, jewel-toned blue palette illuminated by classic gold zari.

❖ Made to order, not off a shelf. This saree took 40 days — dyeing, threading, and roughly 16 on the loom — to complete.

This is a confirmed Butta composition in pure mulberry silk, with Chakram-style medallions and petite figurative zari buttas placed across the Royal Blue field, alongside a Cerulean Blue section worked in a dense Kodi-Valli Jaal. A saree of this type typically represents approximately 16 active days on the loom, although individual weaving time varies. Woven for Idam Living by skilled artisan families in the Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu. Read our story.

Body, Border and Pallu: Across the Royal Blue silk, petite Chakram-style medallions alternate with small figurative zari buttas, spaced generously so the depth of the colour remains visible. The Cerulean section becomes more intricate, covered with a flowing Kodi-Valli Jaal of slender leaves, tiny flowers and curling vine forms. The saree becomes significantly more ornate toward the pallu. A dense diamond-Kattam zari field creates a closely woven geometric surface, giving the silk the richly worked appearance associated with older Kanchi compositions while retaining the clarity of the blue ground. Along the pallu runs a striking figurative register of Yaanai medallions. Each elephant is framed within an arched Maanga-like form and surrounded by curling floral ornament, with a crisp Vanki edge completing the composition. Cerulean, Royal Blue and luminous gold zari together give this saree a grand yet unusually cool-toned old-Kanchi presence. Explore the Butta collection, or browse the wider pure silk Kanchipuram collection for more of this character.

Styling: Keep the blouse in Deep Royal Blue for a continuous jewel-toned look, or pick up the brighter Cerulean for a sharper contrast. Antique temple gold works beautifully with the Yaanai register, while diamonds, pearls or blue stones can keep the styling cooler and more contemporary for wedding receptions, Deepavali gatherings or classical cultural evenings.
